Hi Roger just a quick email to thank you for my one to one tuition which I had at your place. I found your lessons exactly what I was looking for as a new turner, as you taught me the correct presentation of many tools so that I could get on with turning safely. I find now that I am getting a much better finish on my wood and that I can get sanding on much higher grits. catches are almost a thing of the past and I have much more confidence especially on the inside of bowls. My tools are now sharp and with a much better bevel on them. I liked your calm style of tuition in a safe clean environment and her indoors makes a lovely cup of tea. To see your gallery of really fine woodturning inspired me so much to want to get to that standard and I believe I now have a better knowledge to help me climb the ladder to success.
Thanks once again all the best for now Mark Andrews.
With some awe, I watched this naturally skilled craftsman, Roger Gubbin, turn out a beautiful apple from a rough old bit of yew. The short time I spent in his workshop has stimulated me to pursue this hobby with patience and attention. Roger imparts a love of wood as well as thought to the choice and process of working the rough material; I can’t wait to get started! His simple advice also resolved one or two mysteries which have puzzled me as a complete beginner.
Thank you, Roger
Roger is a total professional his woodturning stands out against others, any one that Roger Gubbin works for will not be disappointed.

Recently whilst chatting about sharpening woodturning chisels to Roger I asked him if he would care to examine some of mine. I took 4 chisels across to his workshop and he felt “all was not well”. He then proceeded to show me why, and then gave me a demonstration on the lathe showing me the advantages which could be achieved with some minor, but important changes to the shape and angles of my tools. I have since reground my tools to the specifications Roger has shown me and I am delighted with the results.
Thank you Roger for being so helpful.
Dr Mike Edmonds (Chairman Tavistock Wood Turners Club)
Roger is a fantastic wood turner, very friendly and always on hand to offer advice.
I was a complete novice before my first lesson with Roger. He was very patient , taught me the beginners ropes and fully advised me on the correct machinery and tools to buy.
I then booked another lesson at my house where Roger showed me how to use my lathe and my tools.
I happily recommend to all, I now love turning!
So far I have had three wood turning sessions with Roger.
As a complete novice, I needed to gain sufficient knowledge of equipment and skills to get me started. Roger provided just the right balance of practical and theoretical advice to enable me to “play” safely with my lathe. Roger’s reassuring and calm manner made for a relaxing and enjoyable experience
My next session, some time later, involved bowl turning skills and chucking techniques
(very few of my turnings now leave the lathe without permission), again, being taught in a manner which left me feeling confident as well as more competent.
Finally, I moved onto tool sharpening. It turned out to be a more fascinating lesson than I expected. My gouges are now more effective and my use of sanding time and materials significantly reduced.
I am looking forward to my next lesson.
Many thanks for the lesson in woodturning,
I found it very useful after a long illness,
to regain my confidence in turning again,
you are very patient and helpful.
Thanks again, David
Hi Roger thanks for an accomplished 4 hr morning 1 to 1 tuition .
Initially we looked at safety in workshop etc before we got down to task in hand Screw cutting or Thread chasing!. At this point I thought we had crossed wires as Roger produced a length of PVC pipe! Then went on to explain for practise this is the best medium to start on before you mess up on the wood side.
Well after a very nice and Welcome interlude ( hot tea ) we made a start , and Very impressed with Roger’s technical knowledge of materials and ease which he produced a nice thread and after a few attempts I also produced threads of one sort or other on the outside. Then came internal threads yes quite tricky to start but we got there in the end…another pleasant interlude ( hot tea and nice biscuits as well ) we then discussed chisels , sharpening and the like , which I as a learner Woodturner ( retired Engineer ) I found most valuable . Roger is a man of many skills and talents and very pleasant company to boot ,without reservations I recommend his ability as a 1to1 Trainer , I had a great time thanks again.
Thank you Mrs G for the lovely tea .

Thank you for all your time and patience during my teach in session with you. It was very informative well delivered instruction-Just what I needed at my fledging stage in wood turning. I was delighted to take away a polished bowl and thank you for preparing the log for my next project!
I am very happy to recommend you to anyone wishing to take up this craft or indeed more practiced turners wishing to brush up their techniques.
I attended Rogers workshop for a day of beginners training. I was taught how to set up my grinder and sharpen up my gouges ect. This was followed by some spindle turning and later in the day bowl work. I had an extremely informative day. Roger is a font of woodworking knowledge and a consummate professional. I look forward to my next training day!
Just wanted to drop you a line thanking you for my lesson today. Your love of wood turning really shined through the whole session. From the sharpening and care of tools and lathe to choice of wood, I found the whole afternoon to be of enormous value to my skill base. If anything I have been infected by your enthusiasm for the whole thing. I now have a much better idea which direction I am headed with it and cant wait to have a practice and come for my next lesson shortly after.
“I had a 2 hour lesson on the basics of Wood turning with Roger about 18 months ago and found it extremely useful as not only did I learn how to set up a piece of wood and work on it but but I also learnt how to use the lathe safely and responsibly. Roger showed me the best equipment to use and also were to locate them in my workspace so that i could access and use them efficiently as well as safely. Once he had showed me the best tips and tricks to use to prepare the wood, he then taught me how to use the different tools for certain jobs. Not only was the lesson extremely helpful and got me into the hobby, but it was fun and enjoyable.”

just a quick thank you for Mondays meeting, a very entertaining and enjoyable evening
hope that you got back OK
looking forward to seeing you again
Thanks for the lesson yesterday, very helpful as well as enjoyable. I have been practicing this morning before I forget too much. Also trying to improve my sharpening skills, your tools are so much easier to use than mine!!!!
I have also bought the Record 320 and new chuck. Apparently there are adapters for my SK100 chuck which I may well get.
See you Thursday,
Happy New year! I thought you would like to know that the little mice you made for me to give as a Christmas present was truly well received! My friend said it was the nicest present she had!! So, thank you, too
May I on behalf of Tavistock Turners and Carvers Club thank you very much for your presentation last night. It was very much appreciated, and I’m sure the members learnt a lot.
And on behalf of myself Roger “Thanks a lot Chum”. It was great having you around.
Look forward to catching up with you soon.
Cheers for now
Roger gave me a great half day tuition. After only one hour I was happy using my air brush, he then went on to show me some fine texturing and staining methods. The four hours turned into five or more. Good course great tutor.
Just a quick line to say thank you for an excellent day in your workshop, on airbrushing, sharpening, spindle and bowl turning. Now it’s up to me to put all that info to use.
Many thanks again and a big thank you to your wife for a lovely lunch.
Hello I got your pieces at the shop of Launceston last Friday.

Ps I am Japanese who lived in Tokyo , but in summer in London
I’d like to thank you on behalf of Martock and District Woodturners for the demo you gave us in July. We really enjoyed the evening, it was great to see some new novelty items demonstrated and it was also very entertaining! I thought it was also good to see several processes being show which will give our members ideas for their own turnings.
Hopefully we’ll see you again at Yandles show.
I recently had the pleasure of doing a 4 hour 1 to 1 introduction to wood turning lesson with Roger. Roger has a lifetime of knowledge and experience regarding all aspects of woodturning and he is more than willing to pass on his knowledge too keen young wood turners like myself. His passion for his profession and the art form of wood turning is obvious from the moment you meet him. The lesson had great structure, starting with the very basics of wood turning e.g. Wood types, tools, lathes etc. Throughout the lesson I was able to progress onto practicing various techniques using a variety of differently tools and lathes. Also safety was of the utmost importance and Roger has a great set of soft skills which make you feel comfortable around potentially very dangerous equipment. The lesson was highly informative, practical and fun. At the end of my 4 hours (which was actually closer to 5 hours) Roger provided me with lots of very helpful information to enable me to further progress my woodturning. if you are a woodturner of any level of ability Roger is the man the help you progress!
I just wanted to thank you for the superb turning you did to create the new end bosses for a set of door pillar posts. The work was of the highest quality and I am so grateful for the speed with which you completed the job. In addition thank you for sharing your knowledge – I will definitley sign up for one of your courses based on the time spent with dicusssing the work with you .
With kind regards.
Thanks thaks for an excellent demo last month.

I found Roger through Plymouth Woodturners, after giving him a template of the acorn I wanted for our newel post (which was a copy of the original) he went to work and produced an amazing piece and with a little extra input from myself we got it perfect and couldn’t be a better fit for our home. A very skilled craftsman indeed and a very under valued set of skills that can’t be lost for forgotten…I’ll be recommending him to anyone needing one off pieces made
Many thanks again
I received the finials yesterday and they look fantastic so just wanted to say thankyou for a great job.
Just wanted to say a massive Thank you for yesterday. We both had such a great time. Wonderful experience and day. Thanks for all your time and effort and patience…. and laughs shared with us. So memorable. Wish my dad was still with us so I could show him what I’d made. Think it would make him smile.
Take care Roger. Wishing you all the very best
